Western Mass Professional Soccer finishes fall undefeated

SALEM – A pair of Will Daniels goals in the Nov. 1 finale against Mass United FC ensured an unblemished season for Western Mass Pro Soccer Club following a 2-2 draw at Salem State University.

Daniels scored in the 29th and 56th minutes to give the guests a two-goal lead that the hosts quickly chopped down with strikes from Carlos Diniz and Jared Joaquin in the 64th and 69th minutes, respectively.

The draw allowed the Lusitanos to finish the Fall 2014 season with a 6-0-4 (22 points), tops in the ASL. The Riders finished the campaign unable to reach the win column after going 0-3-6 (6 points).

The contest was a rematch of the season opener between the Commonwealth clubs, which also ended in a draw. 

Local harriers earn MASCAC, All-Conference honors
WESTFIELD – Westfield State University sophomore Ashley Monahan of Springfield crossed the line in 20:42.05 for a fourth place finish at the 2014 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC)/New England Alliance Women’s Cross Country Championship to earn a spot on the MASCAC honor roll and All-Conference team.

She was joined by senior Samantha Hurley of Agawam, who crossed the line 10th with a 5k time of 21:07.47.

Barry makes NE-10 All-Conference Team
MANSFIELD – American International College women’s soccer junior forward Brittany Barry of Springfield was named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference third-team after her first season with the Yellow Jackets after spending her freshman and sophomore campaigns at rival Saint Rose.

She finished second on the team with four goals and one assist for nine points this season.

This is the second time Barry has made an all-conference team after landing on the second team and the all-rookie squad after her break-through freshman year in 2011 as a Golden Knight.

Barry was one of just four Yellow Jackets to start in all 16 games this season.

Rackliffe named Player of the Week
BUZZARDS BAY – Alycia Rackliffe, a sophomore middle hitter for the Framingham State University women’s volleyball team, was named MASCAC Player of the Week on Nov. 3.

The Feeding Hills native averaged 17.5 kills, 2.5 aces, six digs and five blocks in a 1-1 week for the Rams, including 28 kills, two aces, 10 digs and six blocks in the 3-2 win over Westfield State to earn the MASCAC regular season title.

Grant keeps scoring, makes conference honor roll
BUZZARDS BAY – Westfield’s Amanda Grant, a senior forward for the Westfield State women’s soccer team, tallied a goal and two assists in a 1-1 week for the Owls, to earn a spot on the MASCAC weekly honor roll. She recorded two assists in the 3-2 win over Framingham State. She netted a goal in the 5-2 setback to Keene State.

Orszulak recognized by Atlantic Hockey Association
HAVERHILL – AIC hockey’s sophomore left wing Austin Orszulak of Springfield earned a spot on the Atlantic Hockey Association honor roll.

Orszulak had a three-point weekend, with two goals and one assist. He helped set up the opening goal in the Oct. 31 contest, and then tied the game on Nov. 1 at 1-1 with a beautiful breakaway goal that went off the post and in and sealed the game with an empty netter at the end. His five points this season are tied for second on the team.

Elms women’s cross country places second at championships
WESTFIELD – The Elms College women’s cross country team’s Emma Bernard of Springfield, finished 11th overall with a time of 22:20.76 as the Blazers placed second at the 2014 New England Collegiate Conference Championship hosted at Stanley Park.

Caitlin Hoschtetler of South Hadley was 17th with a time of 23:11.

Adam Kuzdzal of Chicopee posted the top time for the men, taking 14th-place with a time of 31:01.83 as the Blazers placed fourth. Joshua Diaz Rolon of Chicopee was 20th (31:52.76).
