Western Mass Relics bring home the gold from National Senior Olympics

The Western Mass Relics Senior Softball Team recently returned from the Summer National Senior Olympics with the Gold Medal for Softball in the age 60-64 division.

Rene Vignault led the Relics with stellar pitching and hitting performances. Walt Sowa, Bob Auchy, Ron Kidd, Joe Conway and Bobby Moore chipped in with several multiple-hit games. 70-year-old Frank Saia had key pinch hits in crucial situations.

The Relics rose up from a last place seeding to sweep the medal round, defeating Tidewater, Virginia, Pierre, South Dakota, and winning the the championship game against hometown favorite Simon's Construction of Pittsburgh, PA.

In the championship game, Jimmy Carmel came up huge with two triples. John Collins tied the game in the last inning with a two-out, two-run double. Vignault then walked with the bases loaded to seal the 17-16 come-from-behind victory.
