Williamson named player of the week as Bears win championship

BUZZARDS BAY – Bridgewater State women’s basketball’s Jenna Williamson of Ludlow was named Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the week on March 3. The junior guard averaged 31.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals while shooting 61 percent (23-for-38) from the floor and 69 percent (9-for-13) from three-point range to earn tournament MVP honors and lead the Bears to their fourth straight MASCAC title.

She set a school record with 36 points to go along with nine rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals in an 88-62 semifinal win over Salem State and tallied 27 points, four rebounds and three steals in a 73-66 championship game victory over Framingham State.

Adamopoulos scores 10 off the bench, helps Pride win title

NORTHAMPTON – Ava Adamopoulos of Ludlow chipped in with 10 points as the sixth-seeded Springfield College women’s basketball team upended top-seeded Smith College in the 2014 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Championship game on March 2.

The Pride (16-11), who defeated all three of the higher seeds - No. 1 Smith, No. 2 Wheaton and No. 3 Coast Guard, won their first NEWMAC tournament title since 2006 and earned the conference’s automatic bid into the 2014 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship tournament.

Dorsey sets Springfield College scoring record

SPRINGFIELD – Michelle Dorsey of Wilbraham scored a program-record 10 goals to power the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team to an 18-5 win over Roger Williams on March 1.

Kelsey Rahilly of East Longmeadow had three assists and a goal for Roger Williams.

Dorsey also netted two goals as the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team posted a dominant showing in their opening game of the 2014 campaign, cruising to a 19-1 win over Eastern Connecticut State on Feb. 25.

Ferrentino named to All-NE-10 third team

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – East Longmeadow’s Krista Ferrentino was selected for the Northeast-10 (NE-10) All-Conference third team.

During the regular season, which she capped with a 16 point, six rebound effort in a 70-67 win over Southern Connecticut State on Feb. 25, she tallied three double-doubles, averaging 14.5 points per game. She shot 74 percent from the free-throw line and 45 percent overall. She leads her team in points with 378.

Ferrentino recorded 12 points and four rebounds in a 75-60 NE-10 quarterfinal loss to Stonehill on March 2.

Trebbe records four points in WNE lacrosse opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Shelby Trebbe of Wilbraham scored three goals, including two during a four-minute, four goal run to give the Western New England University women’s lacrosse team a 6-1 cushion in the first half on its way to a 21-7 win over Manhattanville in the season opener on March 1. The senior defender also registered an assist and three ground balls.

Dudeck nets pair of goals in college debut

KEENE, N.H. – Freshman Keegan Dudeck of Longmeadow netted two goals and an assist in his Golden Bears debut, but the WNE men’s lacrosse team fell 12-10 to Keene State College in the season opener for both teams on Feb. 25.

Dudeck also scored and picked up three ground balls in a 14-5 loss to Stevenson on March 1.

Khampaeng’s 10 saves help lift Owls to victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Mimi Khampaeng of Hampden recorded 10 saves to help the Westfield State University women’s lacrosse team to a 13-4 victory over Johnson & Wales University in the 2014 season opener on March 1.
