Baystate: cardiac rehab open house
Baystate Medical Center's Cardiac Rehab Department will hold an open house on Thursday, May 10, to introduce highly motivated individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease to the hospital's innovative Change of Heart Program.
The free event will be held from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Cardiac Rehab Gym at Baystate Medical Center's 3300 Main St. outpatient care facility.
The innovative Change of Heart Program, introduced at Baystate Medical Center in 1997, is an intensive lifestyle modification program designed to reverse coronary artery disease. The program is based on the well-documented principle that given the proper structure and support, highly motivated individuals can make the choice to lead healthier lives and dramatically decrease their risk of heart disease.
Participants in the year-long program will discover dietary and exercise changes that meet their specific needs, work with a chef and learn how to cook and enjoy yoga and Tai Chi for heart health. They will also learn how to manage stress with Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, and have weekly access to a cardiologist for medical concerns.
The open house will include an introduction to Change of Heart by program director Diane Lavin RN, as well as a yoga workshop, a Mindfulness eating exercise and a tour of Baystate's cardiac rehab facility. There will also be free snacks and heart healthy hors d'oeuvres.
The cost for the year-long program, made in quarterly payments, is $5,000. Many insurance companies cover 90 percent of the cost, including Health New England-PPO, Tufts, and GIC.
Groups are small, including 15 - 20 people, and sessions will be held Thursdays, 4 - 8:30 p.m.
