Diabetes program offered at Holyoke

HOLYOKE Diabetics and their families are invited to attend "Diabetes Self Management," Holyoke Medical Center's diabetes education program. The class is offered the first three Thursday afternoons during the month of September from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The location is the hospital's Main Conference Room.

The program offers a team approach to diabetic education for persons with diabetes as well as their families. The sessions are designed to assist participants in making better judgments about their care, to promote independence, and to foster support and sharing among family members and friends.

Session I (held on the first Thursday of the month) will focus on what diabetes is and what it means to the individual. Session II (second Thursday) will cover medication and the role of exercise in controlling the disease. Session III (third Thursday) centers on dietary management of diabetes. The series is held on a continuous every other month basis.

The classes are free and open to the public. Preregistration is necessary and can be done by calling 534-2789.
