SPRINGFIELD The Springfield JCC Knit Wits club used to knit items for people in Argentina. Now its two active members, Emma Levin and Teresa Regina, knit for a local cause: knitting garments for children situated in Grace House in Northampton, Jessie's House in South Hadley and in Amherst. Grace House provides residential treatment for addicted women and their children. Jessie's House provides food, shelter, and supportive services to families in transition. Each houses an average of 20-25 children-most toddlers, preschoolers, and infants and their moms.
The houses are programs of the Center for Human Development, Inc (CHD), which serves over 4,000 people in Massachusetts and Connecticut in its 45 programs. CHD has been serving the most vulnerable people in the region for 35 years. For additional information, visit www.chd.org .
"When we asked the moms at these houses what they need, sweaters and blankets were the most popular items," says Jim Goodwin, President and CEO of CHD. "The work of the knitting club is beautiful, and will be appreciated."
Anyone interested in joining the Springfield JCC Knit Wits are encouraged to come to a reorganization meeting March 21, 10:30 a.m., at the Springfield Jewish Community Center, 1160 Dickinson Street.
