AGAWAM — After 52 years of service, Chez Josef is under new management, after economic hardships forced its owners to sell their family business.

Chez Josef is now owned by OMS Hospitality Inc., a company owned and operated by Marc Sparks, longtime general manager for the banquet and catering facility.

In a letter addressing creditors, Steven Weiss of Shatz, Schwartz and Fentin, P.C. in Springfield and representative for Chez Josef, stated, "I am pleased to report that the sale was completed late last month [June].Unfortunately, the proceeds were not sufficient to pay all creditors in full. After payment of the secured and priority claims and expenses of sale, and with the discount negotiated with the bank, there is $15,000 available for distribution to unsecured creditors. The total non-insider unsecured claims total approximately $125,000."

To resolve these outstanding claims, the company proposed to pay approximately 12 percent to all unsecured creditors and stated that liquidation or bankruptcy proceedings would further diminish the funds available for payments.

When contacted, Weiss stated that his client was not interested in commenting due to the sensitive nature of the sale.

Sparks could not be reached for comment.

Robin Wozniak, director of Marketing and Sales for Chez Josef, was unavailable for comment.
