The Best Damn Sandwich: Milano Importing week threeDate: 11/14/2018 SPRINGFIELD – Why go to a chain restaurant when the locally owned eateries in the region offer so much more variety?
At least Milano Importing at the corner of Union and Main streets certainly give its patrons a dizzying selection of options when it comes to sandwiches and other dishes.
The news staff of Reminder Publishing decided to give this Springfield institution a hard look by ordering four different sandwiches. Our reader John Verducci suggested a trip there.
Now I’ve gone to Milano’s many times, but the rest of the staff were new to the experience. The family-owned business offers both cold and hot items to eat there or to go.
I’ve tried their Italian sausage grinder with sauce and cheese and recently bought their Chicken Françoise meal for my wife, who was quite impressed. I’ve also picked up the “She’s Sweet,” which has maple ham, maple turkey, and Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and honey mustard. That was quite tasty as well.
On our work visit, though I went back to a favorite of mine, a sandwich named “Anthony’s.” The sandwiches can be made on a bulkie roll or grinder bun. For the purposes of our series I got the roll.
The sandwich features ham, Genoa salami, Mortadella, Provolone, roasted red peppers and the restaurant’s deli dressing. I add some lettuce to the mix.
The result is a very moist and tasty sandwich and one where the individual ingredients seem to magically merge to create a wonderful savory flavor. As I’m a creature of habit I know I will be getting it again.
The service is quick and each sandwich is made according to your order. Milano’s carries a number of imported food items from Italy as well.
Located a few steps on Main Street from MGM Springfield, Milano’s provides a delicious culinary legacy that is alive and well today.
