Raymour & Flanigan celebrates 60th anniversary

Date: 9/20/2013

GREATER SPRINGFIELD – Raymour & Flanigan Furniture invites the community to join in celebrating the retailer’s 60th anniversary. A series of special events will take place later this month to commemorate this milestone. Long before the Raymour & Flanigan brand came to be so well known throughout the Northeast, there was Raymours Furniture Company. Raymours got its start in downtown Syracuse, N.Y., where brothers Bernard and Arnold Goldberg opened their first furniture store in 1947.

It wasn’t until 1953 that the brothers incorporated their business, forming Raymours Furniture Company Inc., now the parent company of Raymour & Flanigan.

Six decades later, Raymour & Flanigan continues to be family owned and community oriented, following the precedent of its founders.

Under the guidance of family members Neil, Steve, Michael and Seth Goldberg, the company has grown its footprint into seven states: Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Recent growth has propelled Raymour & Flanigan into the top 10 among North America’s largest furniture retailers, where it currently occupies the number eight position.

As the furniture retailer has broadened the community it serves, Raymour & Flanigan has likewise expanded its community outreach efforts. Along with support for national organizations like the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the company’s leadership team has encouraged associates to get involved and develop partnerships with local organizations.

Some of Raymour & Flanigan’s contributions have been less visible to the community, most notably the retailer’s eco-friendly practices. In 2007, the company began production at a 41,000 sq. ft. recycling center in Liverpool, N.Y., to process cardboard, paper, plastic and Styrofoam packaging into raw materials that can be used by other manufacturers to create picture frames, moldings, insulation and other products. In the six years since, Raymour & Flanigan has opened additional facilities in Suffern, N.Y., and Gibbstown, N.J., along with more than a dozen smaller-scale operations at each of its customer service centers. Combined, these recycling centers keep more than 15 million pounds of waste out of landfills every year.

“We are committed to being a leader in the furniture industry and the communities that we serve, not just in terms of sales, but in every way possible,” Neil Goldberg, president and CEO, said. “That means being there for our customers, our associates and our neighbors in the community. This philosophy has served us well over the past 60 years and is one that we hope will differentiate us for the next 60 and beyond.”

To celebrate the company’s 60th anniversary and thank customers for their loyalty, Raymour & Flanigan has announced a number of unprecedented offers and sweepstakes, including a $250,000 cash giveaway. Customers can also enter for a chance to win one of 300 prizes on the Raymour & Flanigan Facebook page located at Facebook.com/RaymourandFlanigan. Additionally, the community is invited to attend a series of special events, Sept. 19 to Oct. 5.
