Community Survival Center seeks cash donations for Thanksgiving food baskets

Date: 11/15/2011

INDIAN ORCHARD — The Community Survival Center is continuing its annual tradition of providing Thanksgiving food baskets to families in the center’s service area of Ludlow, Indian Orchard, Wilbraham, Hampden and the Sixteen Acres section of Springfield.

The center’s food pantry staff is requesting donations that will enable them to purchase the food items needed to help those who are struggling to feed their families sit down to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner in their own homes. Those who would like to sponsor a family for Thanksgiving, a donation of $15 will cover the cost of a turkey and $20 will cover the cost of a complete dinner for an average size family.

Those who would prefer to donate food items, the center is in need of the following items for its Thanksgiving baskets: frozen turkeys, stuffing mix, fresh carrots, canned yams, instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, canned pumpkin and pie crust mix.

Last year, the center provided a traditional holiday meal at Thanksgiving or Christmas to more than 1,000 people. It is expected that the number of requests for holiday meals this year will increase substantially.

The center, which is located at 240 Main St., will be distributing Thanksgiving food baskets throughout the month of November and is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and Thursdays until 5 p.m. to accept tax deductible food and monetary donations. The center will be closed Nov. 24 and 25.

Those who have any questions about the center’s programs or how you can help make this Thanksgiving special for someone in need, call the center at 543-3930.
