Springfield PAC to host meeting on IEPs

SPRINGFIELD Families of children with special needs and families of children who are struggling in school and may later learn that their child has a special need, should plan to attend the next meeting of the Springfield Parent Advisory Council (PAC) on April 2 from 7to 9 p.m. when Linda LaPointe from the Federation for Children with Special Needs will present the workshop "An IEP for my Child."

Every child with a disability who is in special education must have an Individualized Education Plan in place. This workshop will take families step-by-step through the development of the IEP, including how to articulate a vision statement, using evaluation results to write annual measurable goals and how to measure their child's progress.

PAC meetings are open to the public and free of charge and are currently taking place at the Professional Development Center (located in the rear parking lot of the High School of Science and Technology, 1250 State St., Springfield).

To ensure handouts, pre-registration is encouraged but not necessary to attend. To register or for more information, please contact Diane Purchase, PAC Facilitator by phone at 787-7194 or by e-mail at purchased@sps.springfield.ma.us or visit the PAC's Web site at sps.springfield.ma.us/pac/.

This workshop is appropriate for any person who wants to learn more about the special education process, even if your child doesn't currently receive services, as the IEP is the vehicle that will drive children down the road to success.
