Jimmy Fund gives walkers a new reason to train for Boston's big race
If you were inspired to run the Boston Marathon, why not try walking it this September and find a different type of inspiration from thousands of people working together to fight cancer?
Online registration for the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai Motor America is now open. The walk will take place on September 16, and offers participants a unique opportunity to follow the sanctioned "marathon" course from Hopkinton to Boston and more importantly, gives walkers a chance to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients now and in the future.
Over its 18-year history the Jimmy Fund Walk has contributed more than $45 million to support cancer research and care at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The 19th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk is aiming to raise more than $6 million and attract a wide range of people, many walking for those affected by cancer, or survivors themselves.
Walkers can choose from one of four routes: a full marathon, a half marathon, a new 5-mile option or a 3-mile route. All walkers on the Hopkinton (26.2 miles), Wellesley (13.1 miles) and the five-mile routes must raise a minimum of $200 in contributions; for the 3-mile Boston Walk, the requirement is $200 for walkers age 13 and older and $100 for walkers 12 and younger. Participants are encouraged to raise more than $1000 to become a member of the Pacesetter Club. Pacesetters receive an exclusive T-shirt and bib number and are recognized at a special reception held in their honor in 2008.
Online tools are available for walkers to use for registration as well as to support them in their goals. The system allows walkers to create personal web pages, send personalized e-mails to supporters, and track fundraising progress. These tools make it easy for participants to be successful fundraisers and make an impact in the fight against cancer.
Those who are inerested in participating but are unable to make it to the starting line on Sept. 16 can register as Virtual Walkers. This option enables people to complete a walk of a distance of their choosing, anywhere and at any time. Virtual Walkers are not required to pay the registration fee and are not responsible for the fundraising minimum.
