PVPC offering updated regional bike map
The Pioneer Valley Planning Commission has completed an update to the popular regional bicycle map, last updated in 2005.
The Pioneer Valley Regional Bike Map is designed to be a tool for active use by area cyclists. In addition to popular on-road cycling routes and bike paths in the region, the map shows popular destinations and local landmarks, along with safety and commuting information. Printed on weather-resistant material using fade-resistant inks, it can be marked with favorite routes to specific destinations.
The bicycling routes depicted on the map were selected by measuring travel lane width, shoulder width, vehicle speed, traffic volume, and parking along each roadway segment, and then evaluated using a Federal Highway Administration Bicycle Suitability Analysis rating system. Identified routes were then sent to experienced area cyclists, who flagged preferred routes and important destinations such as parks, colleges, and major employers. More than 20 cyclists participated in the review, including members of the Springfield Cyclonauts, MassBike Pioneer Valley, Northeast Sport Cyclists, and the Franklin-Hampshire Freewheelers.
The Pioneer Valley Regional Bike Map was printed locally by AM Lithography Corporation of Chicopee. Funding for the map was provided by the Federal Highway Administration and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation through a donation by Family Bike of East Longmeadow and Agawam.
Maps are available free at bike shops throughout the Pioneer Valley region. Maps are also available for a $5 shipping and handling fee (prepaid) by sending a check to the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission at 26 Central St., Ste. 34, West Springfield, MA 01089.
