Hazardous waste day

SOUTH HADLEY The town will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on June 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required. At this event, residents may also bring unwanted medications. Unwanted medications have recently emerged as a significant environmental concern. If flushed down the toilet or the drain, they can end up in surface and drinking water. If put in the trash, they will end up in the landfill, which also has the potential to pollute surface or ground water.

Help protect your family, community and the environment by properly disposing of unwanted medications. Bring your unwanted medication to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event. Look for:

Expired or unwanted prescriptions and medicine

Vitamins

Veterinary medications

Homeopathic treatments

Over the counter medicines.

The town will conduct this special one-time collection for these products at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on June 11.

After checking for medications, South Hadley residents should look in the garage, workshop, kitchen, and garden sheds for other household waste. Pre-registration for the household hazardous waste and unwanted medication collection is required.

The unwanted medication event is sponsored in part by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through a grant o the Northeast Recycling Council, Inc. Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton is donating the services to a professional pharmacist.
