Trash Reminder

SOUTH HADLEY On June 11, residents of South Hadley will have a chance to dispose of their hazardous household products at the South Hadley Department of Public Works from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the DPW Yard on 10 Industrial Drive. In addition, the town is participating with the North East Recycling Council in a pilot project to property dispose of unwanted prescriptions and other personal care products.

Residents need to pre-register by calling the DPA at 538-5033 during normal business hours. Each person will be given an appointment time and asked to indicate the type and the amount of materials they will be bringing. The maximum amount per household is 25 gallons of 25 pounds of materials.

Products that qualify for this free disposal opportunity include prescriptions, pharmaceuticals, and other personal care products, pesticides, insect sprays, pool chemicals, battery acid, brake fluid, degreasers, kerosene, gasoline, paint thinner, solvents, art and craft supplies, household cleaners, photo chemicals, lead and other oil cased pain containing metal, wood preservers, wood strippers poisons, and sealants. For a more complete list, and to register, call the DPW.

Materials that are taken regularly at the Recycling Center are not eligible. These include antifreeze, mercury bearing waste, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil, and good reusable paint.

Here are some helpful hints for residents:

Keep product in the original container, if possible, with label intact.

If original container is broken or leaking, place it in a second container of like material, i.e. flammable in metal, corrosives in glass.

Never mix chemicals. All products should be handled and stored separately in a well-ventilated area, with proper skin protection.

Please note that the materials listed above that are NOT included in the collection can be taken to the Recycling Center on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents should not bring these materials to the Household Hazardous Waste Day.

For questions regarding this event, contact Jane Southworth, South Hadley DPW Solid Waste Coordinator, at (413) 538-5033.
