BHN acquires Phoenix Houses substance treatment programs

Date: 1/4/2022

SPRINGFIELD – Adding to their portfolio of essential treatment centers, the Behavioral Health Network (BHN) is acquiring the Phoenix House’s Massachusetts substance use programs in Springfield, Holyoke and Dorchester.
According to their press release, the programs that BHN will assume include Phoenix House’s outpatient operations in Springfield and Phoenix House’s residential treatment programs located in Springfield, Holyoke and Dorchester, which provide individualized and family focused trauma-informed care through their residential, evidenced-based substance use treatment services. The Phoenix House locations in Massachusetts were a part of the nonprofit organization the Phoenix Houses of New England.
President and CEO of BHN Steven Winn spoke to Reminder Publishing about the BHN’s services and the Phoenix House acquisition. Winn shared that BHN serves the four counties in Western Mass., acting as a provider for a variety of health services. “We have a full line of programing for mental illness, addiction and recovery and for supporting people with intellectual and development disabilities,” said Winn.
The BHN president said his organization felt like a “natural fit” to acquire the Phoenix Houses due to their experience in substance treatment. With the acquisition, Winn described how BHN will be integrating the programs.
“These are a handful of programs that are standing on their own in Massachusetts. We have a much larger set of programs right here, and so there will be a bit of economy of scale. We’ve also been very successful managing these programs,” said Winn, who shared that the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services in Massachusetts considers BHN a strong provider.
For the treatment of individuals dealing with substance abuse issues, Winn explained that recovery is suited specifically to a person’s needs. “We develop a plan that can include anything from counseling once a week to a detox program for people who are really struggling with addiction,” said Winn.
The transition for Phoenix House programs under BHN ownership began in November, with Winn sharing that the transfer for the newly acquired locations has been a straightforward process. “We envision that they will operate seamlessly in the transition and continue to provide high quality care to the individuals that come to them for help,” said Winn.
