Rescue Mission seeks underwear donations during 'Undie' month

SPRINGFIELD Going shopping for clothes this weekend? The people served by the Springfield Rescue Mission would appreciate if you could pick up an extra bag of underwear for "Undie Sunday/Monday Month."

The Mission on Bliss Street has been asking churches and businesses for the past 10 years to encourage their members and employees to donate new tee-shirts, socks and underwear to distribute to the homeless. Although the Mission regularly receives donations of food, used clothing and toiletries, underwear has often been overlooked.

"It's a basic need," June Harr told Reminder Publications. "Nobody likes used undies."

Harr is the Community Service Coordinator for the Mission. She said that one of the philosophies of the Mission is that if they can supply the homeless with the ability to shower and wear clean clothes they then can better deal with the next step in changing their lives.

Harr said the Mission is looking for underwear for men, women and children. All sizes are needed, although she added the most demand is for medium, large and extra large.

Last year the Mission received over 1,500 pairs of underwear and Harr is hopeful a similar number will be received this year. People wishing to contribute may bring underwear to the Mission at 19 Bliss Street any time during the month of September.
