WEST SPRINGFIELD -- Flawless and spotless down to the last detail -- it was Auto Detailing Week, April 13 through 17 at Lower Pioneer Valley Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC). The competition was steep, and teamwork came first.

The Automotive Technology program prepares students for employment within the automotive workforce. The competition required good attendance, an exemplary work ethic, professional appearance and outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

Auto Detailing Week allows students to split up into four separate teams and give a complete auto makeover to four different cars brought in by the public.

Todd Freitag, automotive instructor, said the students were not judged solely on the detailing work of the car but on teamwork as well.

"The students are judged on the difference in the appearance of the car from when it came in and how it comes out," he explained. "The students love it, and they learn to work so well as a team."

The students not only worked together toward the common goal of winning, but also learned from one another. The groups consisted of first year students paired with second, third and fourth year classmates who were able to help and guide each other.

Kurt Tirrell, third year student at CTEC, said he feels good being able to help people take care of their cars, and he's learned so much from the program.

"I have so much fun in this program and learn at the same time," Tirrell explained. "I get along with everyone and we all work well together. If you're somebody who is interested in this field then I would come here because there are good shops and the teachers are nice."

Students who complete the Automotive Technology program have the option of securing gainful employment, continuing formal studies at the post secondary level or pursuing a combination of both.

The automotive team that won first place received two complimentary meals, a $10 gas card and the gratification of a job well done.
