Agawam dessert shop opens, offers unique sweets

Date: 4/10/2015

AGAWAM – Agawam’s newest dessert shop is asking its customers to go, slow down and stop. The Traffic Light Dessert Shop opened its doors on March 1, offering traditional treats, as well as some unique offerings.

Helen Chui runs the Traffic Light and said that she has always worked in customer service but wanted to do something of her own. Though her sister already owns a frozen yogurt shop, she wanted to “make something new.”

So she added a twist to increasingly popular frozen yogurt shops by adding crepes, bubble waffles and shaved ice to the menu.

The crepes, Chui said, are made with no added sugar, so no matter if customers prefer them sweet or savory, they can add the toppings they like.

Chui said that her favorite item, however, is shaved ice, a dessert that is a crossover between Italian ice and ice cream. Made with condensed milk, it is put through a machine that makes it flaky and fluffy.

Like with everything in the shop, Chui said that it is up to the customer to take it beyond a plain dessert.

“Everything here is like making your own, so if that’s what you like, you can put any topping you want, any filling you want,” Chui said.

The Traffic Light allows customers to build their own dessert and experience, but Chui wanted patrons to take something extra, too. When deciding on a name for the shop, she said she wanted the Traffic Light to be spot to unwind.

“I was thinking I want a place for people to relax. We have such a busy life outside, I kind of want them to stop in, relax, and slow down,” she said. “Treat yourself a little bit and go back to your crazy life again.”

When it comes down to it, Chui said it is all about the customers.

“That’s what I want, for people to have a smile when they walk out the door. I always loved customer service,” Chui said. “I like to talk to customers. This is why I enjoy doing it.”

The Traffic Light Dessert Shop is located at 67 Springfield Street in Agawam. For more information, call 317-7915.
