AGAWAM — Plans for The Plex, an indoor/outdoor sports complex proposed for the Crowley's Sales Barn & Stables property located at 32 Shoemaker Lane, have been withdrawn.

Crowley's planned to downsize and relocate its operations to an eight-acre section at the back of the land once the sale was completed, with the Plex occupying the rest of the parcel.

"[Cameron Sports Complex LLC] gave the Zoning Board of Appeals a letter requesting the proposal be withdrawn," Doreen Prouty, chair of the board, said, adding that no reasons for the change were listed in the letter. "No one attended the meeting [on behalf of the project], so we had no one to question."

Don Cameron, owner of Cameron Sports, could not be reached for comment by press time.

In January, Cameron, spoke to Reminder Publications about the project. He cited two grass 225-foot by 330-foot fields; two synthetic, 225-foot by 360-foot fields; a two-story, 15,000 square-foot building housing an equipment rental section, a small arcade, staff offices and more as some of the main features of the complex. He had hoped to break ground on the project by this April.

Alice Crowley, wife of Dennis Crowley and co-owner of the business, has not commented on the change or its implications for her property.

Crowley, wife of Dennis Crowley and co-owner of the business, discussed the plans with Reminder Publications in February. She clarified that the Crowley's wasn't closing its doors, but rather "relocating, restructuring and revamping."

Crowley added that while the horse auctions would not continue, trail rides, private horse sales and other services such as riding lessons would still be offered.

According to the website, the Crowleys will return in April and reopen for business. During the winter months, the family runs horse auctions in Florida and return each spring to Agawam.
