AMHERST – After a one-year hiatus, the town of Amherst gathered for their annual Lighting of the Merry Maple ceremony. After a virtual ceremony a year ago due to the pandemic, the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce and the Amherst Business Improvement District invited residents to ring in the holiday season on Dec. 3 at the Town Common. Festivities began with Wagon Rides for all with many families taking advantage of the free rides. Before the lighting, the Amherst-Pelham Regional Middle School performed classic holiday carols on the steps of Town Hall. The Merry Maple was then lit to plenty of cheering and excitement from the packed crowd. Following the lighting, a parade to welcome Santa started through Amherst and the man himself was leading the parade with the UMass Minutemen Marching Band performing from behind.
