AMHERST – The Amherst Farmers’ Market opened for its 50th anniversary on April 23 as residents and vendors crowded the Town Common on a sunny day.
Market Manager David Machowski said the Amherst Farmers’ Market has grown exponentially since opening in 1972. He said there was a period in the 1980s with just six vendors and a nomadic setup. According to the Business Improvement District Executive Director Gabrielle Gould, the farmers market is now a top-five economic driver for the town with 40 to 44 vendors signed up.
Products have since expanded from traditional crops and items. Shoppers can find handmade wooden bowls, CBD products, soap, lotion, clothing and more at the market in addition to a litany of different produce and flowers available.
“Amherst is essentially a food desert in that unless someone has transportation or is willing to make several legs of public transportation, the AFM is the only place in the center of town to get fresh, local produce, meats and all things farmers’ market.”
