Date: 10/6/2023

AMHERST — The downtown Central Fire Station, located at 68 North Pleasant St., will host the department’s annual Open House on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Firefighters and support staff will showcase the department’s emergency fleet from engines through EMS vehicles as well as demonstrations of the department’s rescue tools and equipment, including the “Jaws of Life” and the regular gear the rank and file put into use on a regular basis. Fire suppression tactics of several varieties will be demonstrated as will a history of the department itself.

Safety demonstrations and information for practical use will be available as will giveaway items from Amherst fire and other agencies.

Fire Chief Tim Nelson said it’s a way to get up close and personal with firefighting in a safe environment.

“It’s a great chance for folks to see what we do,” he said. “I think firefighters are cool and I think everyone should too.”

Refreshments will be on hand and a visit from Smokey Bear is possible, along with other attractions for community members of all ages.

Fire Prevention Week is Sunday, Oct. 8 through Saturday, Oct. 14, and features this year’s campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.” The National Fire Protection Association has sponsored the public observance FPW since 1922.
