AMHERST – The Amherst Regional Public Schools (ARPS) are hosting its yearly Project Backpack program for the Amherst-Pelham region.
“The Amherst Regional Public Schools Project Backpack began in 2010 as a way to ensure that income-eligible students would have a new backpack and school supplies for the start of the 2010-2011 school year,” said Communications Director Debbie Westmoreland. “Over the years we have partnered with the Amherst Rotary Club, the Amherst Police Department, Cradles to Crayons, local faith organizations, local businesses and community members who have donated the backpacks and supplies needed each year.”
Project Backpack has grown since its inception, Westmoreland explained, “When the program began, the district distributed approximately 200 backpacks. This year we have almost 1,000 for distribution.”
This year’s event will take place outside of the side entrance of Amherst Regional Middle School on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Westmoreland said residents are always encouraged to get involved.
“Residents are always welcome to donate backpacks or supplies, which can be dropped off at the ARPS Family Center at Amherst Regional Middle School, 170 Chestnut St., in Amherst,” she said.
