Recount confirms count in District 4 council race in Amherst

Date: 12/2/2021

AMHERST – A recount of the District 4 race for two seats on the Town Council has officially been conducted and confirmed in the original results.

The official recount confirmed that Anika Lopes and Pam Rooney are the elected town councilors from the district. The recount, requested by incumbent District 4 Councilor Evan Ross, was supported by all three parties in the race.

Lopes decisively won the first seat on the council for the district with 595 votes, while Rooney and Ross had 479 and 474, respectively, in the final tally. The recount saw both Rooney and Ross gain one vote each based on initial voting numbers, but ultimately the close race saw Rooney hold on to become a new town councilor for District 4 along with Lopes.

“I want to send my sincerest congratulations to Councilors-elect Lopes and Rooney. I know they are both thoughtful, competent and committed individuals and that District 4 will remain in good hands. I wish them all the best as they work to tackle our town’s challenges over the next two years,” Ross said in a released statement.

Ross will remain a Councilor until Jan. 2, 2022 and stated he will use the rest of his term to continue working hard on housing, climate, economic vitality, racial equity and capital investment while pushing forward the initiatives he has worked and advocated for.

“I am proud of everything that I accomplished and of the work of this first Town Council. Regardless of the result of this election, these first 13 councilors have made an indelible positive impact on our community,” Ross added.
