EASTHAMPTON — The newly-opened Aurora Jewelers is already showing its support for the local community by hosting a food drive this holiday season.
“I’ve always been a community person and giving back has been a part of my identity for a long time,” explained James J. Mourning III, the owner of Aurora Jewelers. “I’m aware that times are not easy in the world, but if I can give back [even] one percent to a community that has embraced me I’ll do just that.”
Non-perishable food items will be collected throughout the next couple of weeks at the store during its open hours. All the donated food will be given to the Easthampton Community Center for distribution to those who are in need.
“It has been going amazingly,” said Mourning. “People are eager to help which is nice to see.”
As Mourning gets his business more settled, he’s hoping to become even more involved in the city. Right now, the business provides free watch batteries and jewelry appraisals for active and veteran military members, as well as members of the Police and Fire departments, including emergency medical technicians.
“Aurora Jewelers intends on being deeply involved with Easthampton and surrounding communities, helping with athletic programs and contributing to fundraisers,” said Mourning. “Also we give the service of free watch batteries and jewelry appraisals for active/veteran military plus police, fire and EMTs.”
The store is located at 106 Union St. in Easthampton and is generally closed on Sundays and Mondays. All donations will be brought to Easthampton Community Center on Dec. 23. Currently, Easthampton Community Center distributes food on Monday and Wednesday mornings and afternoons. Emergency distributions can be arranged by contacting the director. The center also offers weekly brown bags for senior citizens.
