Easthampton Little League intends to play on this spring

Date: 2/3/2021

EASTHAMPTON – While many sport teams continue to miss out on their traditional season, Easthampton Little League plans to play.

In the fall as coronavirus continued to sideline youth athletics, three teams with about 12 children on each had a craving to play. The teams constantly rotated to compete against one another.

Jason Tirrell, president of Easthampton Little League, said there was a “great” turnout in the fall. He added, “I feared kids would get bored, but they were happy to be outside, playing, and seeing their friends in person.”

Tirrell oversees any major decisions in the league. He also deals with Parks and Recreation, as most games are played on city-owned fields.

The decision in allowing the little league’s to have a season came from the board of directors, Tirrell shared.

Registration for the upcoming season is currently open. Beginning mid-May, the season typically runs through the end of June.

Tirrell informed Reminder Publishing that the majority of parents’ money from last year will carry over to this year. This is because the fall season was free of charge.

“The participant numbers this year are right along with last year,” Tirrell claimed. However, he expects to see more – including those who were “on the fence” last year.

All little league teams are required to follow the state mandated laws and procedures, along with precautions dictated by the city. Each player must wear a face mask.

“In the past we had an extensive indoor program, but now it’s best to get outside,” said Tirrell. “We will do whatever to play,” he added.

In closing, Tirrell stated, “I’m happy and proud of everyone. Even though we played with our town, a lot of districts didn’t play at all. We were very lucky.”

With much determination for a fun and successful season, Tirrell looks forward to picking up right where they left off in the fall.
