GREATER SPRINGFIELD Holyoke and Chicopee both celebrated the start of the Christmas season with the annual lighting of the municipal Christmas tree on Dec. 2. In Holyoke, Santa arrived at Heritage Park aboard a special train before greeting children and their families. In Chicopee, he arrived to help flip the light switch and then took up residence at the former library building. It is one of the mysteries of the holiday season how he appeared in both communities at the same time. In West Springfield, scores of visitors toured Storrowton Village during the village's annual "Yuletide at Storrowton" celebration Dec. 3 and 4. Ron Bushior, a 25-year volunteer at the village, is captured portraying a Victorian Santa, dressed in traditional purple, during the village carol sing that closed each day's events.
