Large crowd gathers to celebrate life of Michael AsheDate: 7/13/2018 GREATER SPRINGFIELD – About 500 people gathered at the Hampden County House of Corrections on July 10 to celebrate the career of former Sheriff Michael Ashe. Gov. Charlie Baker, Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, Congressman Richard Neal and Bishop Mitchell Rozanski were among the speakers extolling Ashe’s 42-year tenure as sheriff and his innovative approach to corrections that attracted national attention.
There were laughs at Ashe’s expense, as well as many serious moments during which his legacy as sheriff was noted.
Ashe thanked his staff, the elected officials with whom he collaborated, the public that voted for him, his family and the inmates who embraced the opportunity to change their lives, among others.
A stone monument was unveiled at the conclusion of the speaking program.
