Hampshire School Committee won’t allow sports competition

Date: 12/28/2020

WESTHAMPTON – The Hampshire Regional School Committee met on Dec. 21 to discuss winter sports and voted on a member to join the steering and screening committee.

School Committee Chair Margaret Larson told Reminder Publishing that boys and girls basketball teams will be able to participate in practices but the committee voted the teams would not be permitted to participate in competitive games. There will also be no direct contact between the players, so they will only participate in skill sessions. The athletes will continue to follow the school’s safety protocols.

Larson shared that if other schools are unable to participate in competitive games by January or February, the Hampshire Regional School Committee will entertain having another basketball season in the fall.

Hampshire Regional High School (HRHS) is involved in cooperative (co-op) teams with Easthampton High School’s ice hockey and swim team. Since Easthampton School Committee voted that there are no co-op teams this season, athletes at HRHS will not be participating in either sport.

At the meeting, the committee also selected Collin Black from Williamsburg to be a member of the steering and screening committee for the superintendent search.

Larson said they are looking at the superintendent search in two parts, the first being forming the steering committee that will work on the job description, create interview questions, develop a virtual brochure about the school, and managing the posting process.

In a few weeks, they will form a search committee to begin the process of hiring a superintendent. Larson said the Massachusetts Association of School Committees is helping them with the hiring process and they plan on hiring a superintendent by April.

The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 4, 2021.
