SOUTHAMPTON – The Southampton Mothers’ Club recently announced that their yearly Achievement Award Application is now available online.
The application is available for Southampton seniors who attend Hampshire Regional High School and Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School. Seniors at these schools can also pick up an application at their respective guidance offices.
“Most scholarships are grade-based,” said Muriel Boulanger, a member of the Southampton Mothers’ Club. “Our [application] is what you’ve done with your opportunities in the school.”
According to Boulanger, the Mothers’ Club application places a focus on how students have donated their time inside and outside of the classroom.
Aside from basic information, the application asks students if they have participated in sports or other clubs and organizations throughout the school. It also asks the student to write a short essay of 250 words or less explaining why they deserve the award.
The award will be given to one boy and one girl from Southampton. Each student who wins will receive $1,000 in scholarship money.
The money the club receives is usually sponsored through an annual Christmas auction. With COVID-19 however, the club could not spearhead the auction last December. The club did have enough money left over to carry on with what they have done in the past.
“If we can’t go back to working this year, it is going to be difficult to do the same amount of work next year,” said Boulanger, who added that the club also personalizes dictionaries for sixth grade students with their names inside the cover. “We donate to almost anybody who hits us up.”
Boulanger explained how she wishes the club could hand out more awards like this to students because a lot of students need the money. She added that the Mothers’ Club was built off of helping children succeed within the community.
“Any of our kids need it,” she said. “It’s just a great feeling knowing that you’re helping somebody.”
The deadline to submit an application for the award is April 15. The link to the application can be found at https://www.facebook.com/SouthamptonMothersClub.
