Southampton transfer station announces changes to service

Date: 7/8/2020

SOUTHAMPTON – Effective July 1, recycling protocol may look a bit different. The transfer station announced some changes to what can and can’t be recycled.

The changes are due to alterations in the operations at the Springfield Materials Recycling Facility.

Clear plastic cups and egg cartons will be acceptable to recycle. The lids and straws must be removed and placed in the trash.

Other plastic cups like styrofoam, colored “keg” cups, and cloudy plastic cups are not acceptable, despite any recycling symbols.

According to their announcement, if a clear cup is labeled “compostable” it does not go with recyclables.

Shredded paper and aerosol cans will no longer be accepted.

Residents can bring confidential documents to local businesses like copy centers for secure shredding. If the shreds of paper are paper only and contain no plastic, you can dispose of them in a compost.

Aerosol cans that contained food or personal care ingredients have to go in the trash or with bulky waste.

Cans that still contain hazardous ingredients like spray paint must go to a household hazardous waste collection.
