Forgue wins special election to replace Forgue as selectman

Date: 7/13/2023

CHESTER — Brian Forgue was elected to the Board of Selectmen on July 8, winning a three-way race with 73 votes out of 146 cast.

He will serve a one-year term in the seat left vacant when Selectman Jason Forgue resigned this spring. He defeated Craig Gauthier, who received 55 votes, and Avril Willemain, who received 18 votes.

Brian Forgue, 20, is a political science student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and one of the leaders of a petition drive to organize a special election for the seat, rather than leaving it vacant until next spring’s town election. Forgue is the son of the selectman he is replacing.

“I am so incredibly grateful and excited to have been elected as a Chester selectman. I’m so honored to be chosen by my neighbors to work for this community, and I’m ready to make this whole town better,” said Forgue upon learning the results.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in this process, from signing the citizen petition to voting (this level of turnout was astounding). Thank you to everyone who was supportive and helpful to me along the way, and thank you to Avril and Craig for an honest, hard-fought campaign. Let’s get to work,” Forgue added.

The selectman seat was the only item on the July 8 ballot. The regular town election was on May 6.
