Huntington Council on Aging is bringing the concert to you

Date: 3/10/2021

HUNTINGTON – The Council on Aging (COA) is offering seniors a chance to have traveling musicians come to their homes on March 27 to play some lively songs in their yards to herald spring.

The group, Wild Thyme, comprised of three fiddles, two guitars, with vocals, mandolin and whistling, will perform two Celtic songs preselected by the seniors who sign up for a visit

“The idea was something to break up this COVID isolation, because we could not do anything live with people.  Irish music I find to be always uplifting,” said Kathleen Peterson, COA director.

Peterson said seniors are asked to stay in their homes with their windows or doors opened, to keep 12 feet from performers and wear masks.  She said they will be choosing from four different songs at each stop.

“Our goal is to break up the isolation, and to recreate our community. Because of this COVID, we’ve become separated and isolated,” Peterson said, adding that he is looking forward to hosting live entertainment in the future.

The traveling caravan of musicians is being sponsored locally by the Huntington Cultural Center, on a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Center.

Starr Adams of Wild Thyme said they have never done a performance quite like this.  Adams, who teaches at Hampshire Regional High School said her school did outdoor visits to seniors last year, where they drove by in caravans and put signs congratulating the graduates in their yards.  She said it’s a little like that.

“It’s a nice idea,” Adams said.  She said the event will be weather-dependent.

Huntington seniors who would like to sign up for a visit by Wild Thyme may contact the Council on Aging at 512-5205 by March 16.
