HUNTINGTON — Library Director Amanda Loiselle is taking advantage of extended hours for the Huntington Public Library, and hopefully some free time for residents during February school vacation week, to gauge interest in starting two book clubs, one for young adults and one for adult readers, although Loiselle said anyone would be welcome to join either.
“I’ve been trying to get a Book Club together,” Loiselle said. “I have a general idea of what I want to present, but I want to see the level of interest. The goal is to see how many come, and have a book picked out by the end of the meetings.”
Loiselle said for the young adult readers, which she counts herself among, there are a lot of “really good books” that have been published recently, such as the Legendborn book series, which she said has won several awards and will be among her recommendations.
For the Adult Book Club, originally her idea was to start a Banned Book Club, drawn from a 52-week challenge list recently published by the American Library Association of the most frequently banned books over the last 10 and 20 years. Loiselle said she has a small display of Huntington library books that are on the list, but she has and is open to other suggestions, as well.
“I thought it would be a fun opportunity to start a community read,” Loiselle said about the book clubs, adding that she hopes people will come to the interest meetings.
The library will be open Feb. 21-23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, and on Feb. 24-25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Events during vacation week include:
