HUNTINGTON – The Huntington Recreation Committee is offering free new 300 to 500 piece family friendly jigsaw puzzles to combat the winter blues.
Promoting the puzzle pick as “something to do with your family, or perhaps a friendly competition between friends,” the committee will be giving away pre-reserved puzzles at the Huntington Library Parking Lot on Sat. Feb. 13 between 2 to 3 p.m. Masks are required and occupants must stay in their cars.
Puzzles must be reserved by emailing huntingtonrec@gmail.com with name, address and telephone number, or leaving the same message at 667-0085 by Feb. 6.
“We thought this would be a good pastime that gets the family to spend quality time together away from the computer. So many people and students are either working or schooling from home and need a break from screen time. Our goal is to find activities that help create family time away from the computer,” said Vicki Mayhew of the Huntington Recreation Committee.
Mayhew is ordering the puzzles online, and will base the order on the number of reservations she gets. “I am ordering some duplicates so if friends in different households want to do the same puzzle and see how their friends’ progression is going. Perhaps post COVID, we could do a puzzle swap,” she said.
The committee is also encouraging participants to share photos of their progress or completion on the Huntington Recreation Committee Facebook page for others to see.
In December, the Huntington Community Events Committee, on which Mayhew also serves, did a gingerbread house kit pick-up, which she said was very successful. “Everyone was very thankful for it, and posted pictures to share, it was nice to see,” she said.
“With both committees we are trying to be creative to still offer activities to the community safely. It is challenging,” Mayhew said.
