HUNTINGTON – Many residents in Huntington are still reeling from the unexpected deaths of Huntington Liquor Store owners Evelyn Korfias and Gary Rom on Dec. 14.
Gary Rom, 70, and Evelyn Korfias, 59, both of 12 Nagler Cross Rd., Huntington, were found deceased in their home by a friend. The cause of death is being investigated by the state medical examiner, but at this point, investigators do not suspect foul play was involved, according to a spokesperson for the Hampshire County district attorney’s office.
In addition to co-owning the store, Korfias served on the town Planning Board, and had run in 2017 for a seat on the Board of Selectmen.
In describing herself for that campaign, Korfias said she was one of four rambunctious kids born to a housewife and steel mill worker in a small town in Illinois. She attended grade school in a four-room schoolhouse with 24 other students. She earned her associate’s degree in graphic arts and Bachelor of Science degree in advertising from Southern Illinois University. After that, Korfias worked in Chicago as an art director and problem solver for several nationwide and international brands.
In 2001, she and her partner Gary Rom bought the Huntington package store and moved here permanently. She said she was running for the Board of Selectmen to help the town grow while keeping taxes on the aging and diminishing population low.
In the days following their death, lit candles and bouquets were placed at the door of the Huntington Liquor Store, which is now closed.
