New administrators named at all 3 Gateway district schools

Date: 8/18/2022

HUNTINGTON – Gateway Regional Superintendent Kristen Smidy said she is pleased to announce several new administrative positions in the school district.

“All of them are very enthusiastic, and are already committed to the district and working hard to make sure that school gets off to a good start. They have brought fresh energy to the district,” said Smidy.

Andrew Samuelson of Chicopee is the new principal at Littleville Elementary School. Samuelson has a bachelor’s degree in dairy science, and two masters degrees in education and school leadership, according to Smidy. He served as a literacy coach in Northampton for the past five years, and a teacher for five years before that, she said. He served as principal of the elementary school in the town of Holland from 2005 to 2008.

Will Sullivan of Longmeadow will be the new assistant principal for Gateway Middle School and High School. A former eighth grade social studies teacher in Longmeadow with a doctorate and two masters degrees, Sullivan won a Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching award in 2018.

Vanna Maffuccio of Becket will be the new principal at Chester Elementary School. She previously served as an interventionist in Gateway Middle School, and before that taught elementary school in Pittsfield. She has a masters degree, Smidy said.

“I feel very grateful, Chester is a home away from home,” Maffucio said about her new position. She said they just wrapped up an adventure camp at the Chester school with a science-themed assembly. “It was exciting to invite the community in,” she said.

“Everyone has been really warm, welcoming and supportive,” said Samuelson, who said he was able to visit the area from mid-May to the end of the school year to meet people.

Both Samuelson, coming in from Chicopee, and Sullivan from Longmeadow said they have the prettiest drive coming out to Gateway.

“Over the mountain and through the woods,” Sullivan said.
