Date: 6/8/2022

HUNTINGTON – Huntington’s Memorial Day Parade stepped off from Pettis Field at 8:30 a.m. led by Lou Purinton, flag bearer, and veteran James Arnold, followed by Selectman Roger Booth and Parade Organizer Lori Belhumeur, a 55-year member and president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Belchertown Unit 239.

Other participants included the Huntington Historical Society, the Huntington Dance Center, the Pioneer Valley Assembly of God and Huntington Food Pantry, and Dale Russell in a 1922 Hupmobile.

The Gateway Marching Band played patriotic songs, led by Band Director Beth Guertin. Members of the Huntington Fire Department marched followed by their Engine 1, a rescue vehicle, and the Montgomery Fire Department Engine 1.

Booth began the ceremony from the gazebo on the town commons, welcoming the Rev. Charles Cinelli of the Huntington Evangelical Church to give the invocation. Also speaking were students Alex Henrichon, who read the governor’s proclamation, Evelyn McGowan, who recited the poem “In Flanders Field,” and Firefighter John McVeigh, who read President Woodrow Wilson’s 1914 Memorial Day address, with more selections by the Gateway band.

Purinton and veteran Thomas Ray laid the wreath. Members of the Fire Department gave the rifle salute, followed by taps. The Rev. Carol Smith of the First Congregational Church of Huntington gave the benediction.
