CHESTER — A new swap shed was delivered to the Chester transfer station on July 21, thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection awarded to the Chester Board of Health for best practices recycling. The purpose of the shed is to promote reuse of durable goods.
Chester Board of Health member Elizabeth Massa said the board applies for recycling grant funding from DEP every year. “For the last three years the Chester BOH has made several improvements to the transfer station, including a grant won for a universal waste shed last year. Using accumulated [DEP] grant awards, we choose to use the funds this year for a 8 by 20 Conex box to house our new Chester Swap Shed for recycling gently used goods,” Massa said.
Beginning July 29, transfer station permit holders will be able to bring household items such as kitchen items, hand tools and small power tools (not fuel-powered), games and toys, sports equipment, non-upholstered furniture, CDs and DVDs, decorative items, and small working appliances to recycle, instead of throwing them away.
Only items that are easily reusable will be accepted for the swap shed, as the town cannot accept items that they will have to pay to throw away if nobody adopts them.
All items must be checked in with the transfer station attendant. If transfer station disposal fees apply to risky or low-demand items, the attendant may charge a disposal fee for the item. For more information, call 413-354-7781 or email boardofhealth@townofchester.net.
“We are thrilled to offer this in Chester,” Massa said.
