Nomination papers available for South Hadley Fire District No. 2 annual election

Date: 2/2/2022

SOUTH HADLEY/GRANBY – Nomination papers for the South Hadley Fire District No. 2 annual election are now available and there are three open positions in this year’s race.

Positions up for election this year are a seat on the Prudential Committee, as well as the Water Commissioner and Moderator positions. Both the Prudential Committee and Water Commissioner are three-year terms, while the moderator position is a one-year term.

District Clerk Barbara Miller said participation typically is low but that it varies on positions available as well for number of candidates interested in running. In last year’s election, polling locations were separated due to COVID-19 and the district elections took place in their district offices rather than with the regular town elections at South Hadley High School, leading to very small number in voter turnout for district elections.

“Our participation has been much better since we’ve joined with having our election at the same time and place as the town election. Prior to that we had pretty low turnout, it would be less than 100 people on a good year,” Miller said. “All the voters are coming into vote in the town election. Then they go across the hall and come into our election and vote in our election as well. We had like 350 or 400 people when we did it with the town.”

This year though, that will not be an issue as the Annual District Election will be held at South Hadley High School on April 12. Nomination papers became available on Jan. 31 and must be signed by a minimum of ten District 2 registered voters and returned to the District Clerk’s office by noon on Feb. 22.
Interested parties can contact the District Clerk’s office at 534-5748 for nomination papers as the station is currently closed to the public.
