Senior Center hosts the Scantic River Artisans show

HAMPDEN – The Hampden Senior center will be the home for the next six weeks of the second annual exhibit of the Scantic River Artisans.

Nan Hurbut, the president of the group of artist from around the area explained that after the exhibit on Jan. 20 that was staged in the multi-purpose room of the senior center, the pieces will be display throughout the center for six weeks.

According to the organization’s website (www.scanticriverartisans.org) , “the mission of the Scantic River Artisans is to connect the community through diverse, dynamic and creative experiences. Dedicated to providing opportunities for local artists of all ages and skill levels to explore, develop, and market their creations. Through events and educational programming, the Scantic River Artisans strive to foster the appreciation of visual art and aspires to raise awareness about the relevance and intrinsic value of the visual arts in our community. We have a passion for creativity!”

The exhibit included paintings in various mediums, sculpture in wood and glass, and several authors.

Brian Nichols of East Longmeadow explained his “Glass Garden” was formed through the use of a kiln, softening the glass so he could shape it as flowers.

Authors Diane Darin was there with her children’s book, “And the Winner Is…” a book about parenting. The Springfield writer collaborated with artist Rhonda Mader-Theroux and is now planning another book for children.

Sandra Howell of Hampden exhibited her line of books for youth that featured themes involving horses.   

Hurbut, a painter, explained the organization will have its first juried art show in October.
