On June 22, 2017, members of ADAPT, a national disability rights organization, staged a “die-in” in Senator Mitch McConnell’s Office to protest cuts to Medicaid. This action came shortly after Senator McConnell released the Senate’s Healthcare Bill. It has been followed by similar actions at the offices of senators around the country. ADAPT, disability advocates across the country, and Stavros stand in solidarity as we reject cuts to Medicaid.
Medicaid provides Long Tern Services and Supports (LTSS), including Personal Care Attendant (PCA) services, Durable Medical Equipment (DME), and other necessary supports for those with disabilities. Without the Medicaid program, individuals with disabilities will be unable to afford their care or sustain their health, and independence.
As an advocate for Stavros, I have seen the impact that Medicaid has had on the lives of persons with disabilities. I believe that caps to Medicaid funding and the phasing out of Medicaid expansion, as proposed in McConnell’s Senate Healthcare Bill, will have devastating outcomes for Americans with disabilities. As written, it may force persons with disabilities to live in institutions in order for them to receive the care they need. Institutionalization of persons with disabilities is not cost effective nor does it reflect our country’s core healthcare principles. Call your Senator and stand with Stavros as we work to protect Medicaid!
