AIC football player signs NFL contract

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – American International College offensive lineman Viondy Merisma has agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League as an undrafted college free agent announced by the team on the evening of May 19.

Merisma, a Massachusetts native from Waltham, was the Northeast-10 Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2013 and participated in the Titans rookie mini-camp over the past weekend. He joins four other newly undrafted players on the roster. He showed off his skills at the University of Massachusetts Amherst NFL Pro Day in March.

The 6-foot, 2-inch, 294-pound lineman played four seasons under head coach Art Wilkins at American International, earning NE-10 All-Conference first-team honors twice.

Gervais named WSU Female Athlete of the Year
WESTFIELD – Westfield State University (WSU) Track and Field standout Targie Gervais of Springfield has been selected the school’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year for the 2013-14 academic year.

Gervais was a record-setting sprinter and two-time All-American for the WSU women’s track and field team. She qualified three times for the NCAA Division III national finals, including an All-America second place finish at the 2013 indoor championships.

She earned All-New England honor nine times and was a two-time New England champion. She also earned three All-ECAC certificates, including one ECAC crown. In total, she was an 18-time champion while competing for WSU; she finished first nine times in MASCAC championship meets and six times in the New England Alliance championships. She established five school records in the following sprinting events: 55 meters, 60 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters, and 200 meters indoors.
   
Castleman named All-CCC
SPRINGFIELD – Western New England University women’s lacrosse player Emily Castleman of Wilbraham, repeated her All-CCC second team status it was announced recently. The elementary education major has posted a career year in the cage with 16 victories, 8.57 GAA and .463 save percentage. She also has 100 saves for eighth in the conference while rating second in GAA.
