Girls invited to learn to play hockey

The Connecticut Northern Lights Girls Ice Hockey Program, headquartered at the International Skating Center (ISCC) in Simsbury, is currently offering a Girls-Learn-to-Play-Hockey Program for girls ages 5-9 interested in learning the basics of ice hockey.

The hour-long Hockey Foundation Program is held on Saturdays & Sundays and there are three sessions, from September through mid-March. The session dates are Sept. 10- Oct. 30, Nov. 5- Dec. 18, and Jan. 7 March 19.

The Program is intended for girls between the ages of five and ten with 0-2 years of hockey experience. Its goal is to teach girls the fundamentals of ice hockey skating, stick-handling, passing and shooting while emphasizing skill development, cooperation, fair play, fitness, and, most importantly, fun. The heart of the Northern Lights philosophy is development of the "whole person".

To accomplish this, the Northern Lights place a strong emphasis on treating the players as athletes and focus on developing self-esteem, self-confidence, teamwork and leadership.

Once a girl has mastered the fundamentals, the Northern Lights offers opportunities to join a team. The Northern Lights fields teams of multiple skill levels in each of the age brackets of U-10, U-12, and U-14, as well as a full-season High School team (grades 9-12), attracting players from throughout Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.

The program is a member of the New England Girls Hockey League and the Connecticut Hockey Conference.

Girls ice hockey is currently one of the fastest growing sports in the US. Female hockey membership in USA Hockey has increased by over 50% in the past several years.

Numerous Connecticut public high schools, including Simsbury, West Hartford, Ridgefield, New Canaan, Fairfield, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, Monroe, West Haven, Stamford, and Trumbull, now have girls ice hockey teams, with more being added each year.
