Jennifer Fonseca, 10, daughter of Bill and Darlene Fonseca of East Longmeadow, started taking group baton lessons at age four. Her group competed in their first baton competition when she was five.

In 2007, Jennifer performed her first solo routine at the Massachusetts state competition and placed second in her division. She continues to take baton lessons at the Academy of Artistic Performance. Jennifer has also entered competitions with her group from that studio, the Academy Sweethearts.

In their most recent competition, the Massachusetts State Twirling Championship, the Academy Sweethearts 2, which included Jennifer and nine other girls and the Academy Sweethearts 1, which included Jennifer and three other girls, won the Massachusetts State Twirling Championship in both of their divisions. Jennifer, performing her X-Strut routine for the first time, earned a medal by placing second in her division and she earned an additional medal as runner-up for her solo routine.

She is looking forward to competing in New Hampshire State Twirling Competition at the end of April with a brand new solo routine.
