Monahan honored by MASCAC

BUZZARDS BAY – Westfield State University’s (WSU) Ashley Monahan of Springfield was selected as the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) indoor track and field rookie of the week on March 3.

Monahan placed 12th in the 1,000 meter run at the Open New England championships with a school record time of 3:00.49, surpassing the longstanding record of 3:03.34 set by Linda Phillips in 1992.

The WSU indoor track and field teams will compete in the ECAC Division III championships this weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

WSU’s Targie Gervais, also of Springfield, was also named to the MASCAC weekly honor roll.

She placed 12th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.90 at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICCCA) Indoor Championships. Also competed in the 200 meter dash, finishing 28th with a time of 25.89.

Pickett powers Blazers to title game, earns conference honors

CHICOPEE – Junior forward JC Pickett of Chicopee was named Honorable Mention All-NECC following the 2013-14 season. Pickett, who was named Honorable Mention All-NECC last year, averaged 11.9 points and 10.5 rebounds per game during the campaign.

Pickett hit on 52.6 percent of her shots against league foes and connected on 67.1 percent of her free throw attempts. Pickett finished with 215 points in conference action.

Pickett ended the season on a strong note, recording double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds as the Elms College women’s basketball team beat Mitchell College on Feb. 28 to advance to the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) championship game.

The Blazers ultimately fell in the title tilt to Regis College 71-43. Pickett had seven points and eight rebounds and was named to the NECC Championship All-Tournament team.

Rackliffe named MASCAC co-rookie of the week

BUZZARDS BAY – Framingham State University women’s basketball’s Alycia Rackliffe of Feeding Hills earned MASCAC co-rookie of the week honors on March 3.

The freshman forward averaged a double-double with 12.3 points and 12.3 rebounds while adding 3.3 blocks in a 2-1 week for the Rams.

She netted a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds in the 62-53 MASCAC tournament semifinal win over WSU and nine points and 16 boards with four blocks in the 73-66 championship loss to Bridgewater State.

She started the week with 16 points and seven boards in the 75-53 quarterfinal victory over Worcester State.

AIC lacrosse falls to Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Despite two goals from Kevin Papineau of Westfield, the American International College (AIC) men’s lacrosse team was unable to overcome a 7-0 hole and dropped a 12-6 decision to Mercy on March 4.

West Springfield’s Bobby Spano scored a goal and an assist, while Josh Gagnon on Holyoke also potted a goal in the loss.

Cherutich moves up to 23rd nationally in 5,000-meter run

BOSTON – Jeptui Cherutich of Springfield moved up to 23rd in the country in the 5,000-meter run in 17:30.19 as the AIC women’s track and field team competed at the Boston University Last Chance meet in hopes of making the NCAA National Field on March 2.

Cherutich also recorded a 13th place finish in 10:02.51 at the NEICAAA Championships at Boston University on March 1.

Gallo’s three points help Pride past Roger Williams

SPRINGFIELD – Kelly Gallo of Westfield contributed a pair of goals and an assist to help the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team to an 18-5 win over Roger Williams on March 1.
