Newcomers get win for WNEC

Springfield native Asif Abdul-Wadud was among the top newcomers on the Western New England College men's basketball team that posted a 22-8 record this past season. This was the second highest win total in the program's 41-year history. The Golden Bears

also captured the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season crown with a 14-2 mark and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Western New England College ended its final year in the GNAC by winning the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament for the program's first-ever post-season championship title.

Abdul-Wadud, a 5-9 junior point guard, averaged 7.5 points with a team high 98 assists and 55 steals in 30 contests in his first full season as a starter. He compiled a season high 16 points in the first meeting against Daniel Webster, along with career bests of nine rebounds in the second game against the Eagles, and 10 assists in a 68-62 victory over St. Joseph's, Maine in the championship game of the ECAC Tournament.

For his efforts, Abdul-Wadud earned a spot on the All-GNAC Third Team. An Electrical Engineering major, Abdul-Wadud is a 2004 graduate of Sabis International School where he was the captain/MVP of both the boys basketball and cross-country squads, and an All-League performer in both sports. He also lettered in baseball.

Abdul-Wadud also is the top performer on the Western New England College men's cross-country team.

Freshman guard Chris DeVine of Wilbraham was also a player that participated in this phenomenal season.

The 6'3" DeVine appeared in all 30 games for the Golden Bears averaging 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds coming off the bench. He also was fourth on the team with 50 assists. DeVine netted a season high 11 points vs. Albertus Magnus College along with five rebounds against Nichols, Daniel Webster, and Southern Vermont. He also dished out a season best five assists against both Curry and Emerson.

DeVine is a 2006 graduate of Minnechaug Regional High School where he was captain of the boys' basketball team, an All-Western Massachusetts selection, and the MVP of the Western Massachusetts Tournament.
